Birdsong Project wins GRAMMY

The Birdsong Project, a historic and unprecedented outpouring of creativity by more than 220 music artists, actors, literary figures, and visual artists, won the 2024 GRAMMY for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package. The artists came together to celebrate the joy that birds bring to the world and to elevate the message of the environmental threats they face. The project was produced by Grammy Award-winning music supervisor Randall Poster. Original music, artwork, and poetry performances are available on digital streaming platforms and as a limited-edition LP box set. Birding Society to host author Rufus Stephens
Birding Society to host author Rufus Stephens

The Wimberley Birding Society will host Rufus Stephens, an award-winning wildlife biologist, author, and one of the founders of the Texas Master Naturalist program, on February 26, at 10 a.m. at the Wimberley Community Center. He will be discussing his book, “Land Stewardship for Birds: A Guide for Central Texas,” co-authored by educator Jan Wrede, published in August 2023. The talk is open to the public.

Have you ever wanted to be a citizen-scientist? If so, you have a great opportunity this month with the Great Backyard Bird Count. The GBBC is a fun, free and easy way to collect data that will give scientists at the Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology an idea of how birds are faring in our beautiful Wimberley and how they might be helped and protected. I am only a casual backyard birder, but I plan to participate.

The Hill Country Band plays music from Italy

The Hill Country Community Band will present their first concert of the year, “Feste Italiana”, on February 18 at 4 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Wimberley. Directed by Dr. Manuel Arambula, this free and family-friendly program will include “some Italian blockbusters” such as “The Pines of Rome” by Ottorino Respighi, and transcribed by Guy M. Duker, “Nessum Dorma”, an aria from the final act of Puccini’s opera Turandot and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera, and “Florentiner March”, an Italian Grand March, by Julius Fucik, Op.214, and edited by John R. Bourgeois.
