Last week, Wimberley High School Texan soccer sat comfortably in fourth position in the district behind Boerne, Fredericksburg and Davenport High Schools.

Coming off of a difficult loss to Boerne High School on Friday, Feb. 10, Wimberley High School’s Lady Texan soccer players were encouraged.

Texan basketball can count this season as wildly successful, building a strong core around a handful of seven young men who bonded in their commitment to work Coach Mike Whitten’s system.

The Wimberley High School Lady Texan basketball team made big strides this season behind young leadership.

Wimberley High School’s Lady Texan soccer (2-0-1 district) has been plagued over the years with one certain fact: they play in a tough district in one of the toughest 4A regions in the state. Thankfully, the team has never accepted that as an excuse but seem to use it as an opportunity to play good teams in preparation for the playoffs.

Ending a season calls for reflection. Thoughts can turn to where things went right or wrong, but for teams fighting for a playoff spot, those thoughts get put on hold. The time to consider success or failure must wait until the final buzzer sounds in the last contest. Win, and you are in. Lose, and the time to ask “what if?” begins in earnest.

Nearing the end of a district season in basketball can become a grind. Playing out the string for playoff position, the varsity Wimberley High School Texans team works to stay focused, solidify their seeding and build momentum heading into the postseason.

Sophomore Cassidy Davis qualified for the Texas 4A University Interscholastic League’s state championships in both the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 100-yard Breaststroke held last week in San Antonio.

“No plan survives beyond first contact with the enemy.” This quote, frequently attributed to General Colin Powell, has roots in words from seventeenth-century Prussian Army field marshal Helmuth von Moltke: “No plan of operations reaches with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the enemy’s main force.” Former boxer and heavyweight champion “Iron Mike” Tyson summarized it more succinctly: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

Soccer is considered a “spring” sport for Texas University Scholastic League purposes.
