Large areas of land across Texas remain at risk of wildfire, thanks to worsening drought conditions across the state. Currently, over 90% of Hays County is categorized as “abnormally dry,” according to the National Integrated Drought Information System.

WHS UIL academics now district champs

Wimberley High School students qualified for regionals in 23 individual spots at the District 28-4A UIL Academic Meet on March 25-26 in Wimberley. In addition, five teams placed first in the team competitions, qualifying them to compete at regionals as well. In all, WHS placed first at the meet, 96 points ahead of second-place Boerne HS, to win the Academic UIL District Championship.

The Hill Country Alliance, a nonprofit organization to raise awareness of the Central Texas Hill Country, is now hosting its 16th annual photo contest. This year’s Hill Country Photo Contest, entitled “Snapshot of the Hill Country,” challenges photographers to share their view of the fragile resources, growing communities and scenery of the Texas Hill Country. The contest is open to entries from now until May 31. Photographers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate. Photos can be submitted online by visiting HCA’s website: hillcountryalliance.org/PhotoContest. Winners will receive cash prizes and their photos will appear in HCA’s 2023 Calendar. The city of Wimberley finalized the different funding mechanisms the city is using to pay for the multifaceted improvement project on Oak Drive. The total cost of construction of the project is $895,995.65 in addition to the original $475,000 cost to purchase the property.

The Texas Relays are the second largest track meet in the United States and draw some of the best competition in the nation. While it is a collegiate competition at its heart, the top Texas high school athletes also compete with a stringent list of qualifying times required to enter. While it may not be the state championships, it isn’t too far off, and in some categories it can be even more difficult.
