No-hitter brings softball back

After a 13-1 loss to rival Canyon Lake, the Texans needed a big boost in order to get back into the playoff contention.

After a 13-1 loss to rival Canyon Lake, the Texans needed a big boost in order to get back into the playoff contention.

On Tuesday night, Wimberley found themselves back in the hunt with a huge win.

Following a no-hitter thrown by Ashlyn Castro, the Wimberley softball team got back in the win column with a huge 3-0 win over the Bandera Bulldogs to stay within the district race for the playoffs.

After a scoreless first two innings, it was the Texans who got on the board first as Jayden Jamension scored with two outs after taking home on a wild pitch to give the Texans a 1-0 lead.

Bandera had two opportunities in the top of the fourth inning to score, having the runners on the corners with one out.

However the Texans got out of the jam by catching the Bandera runner from stealing for the second out before Castro struckout the hitter to prevent the run coming from third base.

A scoreless fifth inning left the game at 1-0 as Wimberley looked to hold on to the lead.

After holding off Bandera in the sixth inning, it was looking grim for the Texans as they had two outs with no base runners.

However Addison Kirbo reached first base following an error by the Bulldogs defense to give the Wimberley hope. Peyton Smith then hit a double towards left field to score Kirbo to extend the lead at 2-0. Reese Adams then hit a flyball to the shortstop which was dropped to allow Smith to score as the Texans extended the lead at 3-0.

Heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Texans looked to close out Bandera. But it went awry as two hit batters allowed the Bulldogs runners in scoring position with the potential game tying run at the plate.

Despite having runners in scoring position, the Texans got out of the jam as Castro struck out the next batter before Bandera hit into a fielder’s choice as shortstop Smith threw to home to capture the final out and end the game.

It was a special night for Castro as she allowed no hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts.

Wimberley wrapped up their week with a Friday road trip to Fredericksburg to take on the Billies.

While the Texans kept it close, Fredericksburg kept Wimberley off the board as the Billies went on to win 4-0.

The Texans return home on Tuesday as Wimberley hosts Davenport in an important District 28 showdown before traveling to Boerne to battle the Greyhounds Friday Night.
