It didn’t even take a full game for the Wimberley Lady Texan soccer team to right a historical wrong.

For the first time, Wimberley has a district champion soccer club. It may seem strange for a team that has been one game away from making the state tournament for the last three years, but neither the boys’ nor the girls’ soccer team had ever taken that typical first step to playoff success by bringing home a district championship.

The Lady Texans played Davenport last week in the final regular season game. A win would assure that they would correct the issue at hand.

“It was a big deal,” Coach Brinton Nute said. “We knew going into it how much it meant to us and the school to win a district title. Being in a district with Boerne every year, we often play very well and come up short… The girls knew what was on the line, and their performance reflected that.”

Wimberley went up 1-0 halfway through the first half on a cross to the back post by Haley Lopez. The Texans knew that Davenport would pull out the stops to try and score a goal and doubled down on the defensive end. When Sela Jones scored from outside of the box in the second half, the game was figuratively over. A few minutes later, the thunder rolled and a lightning delay was called. Staring a 2-0 deficit with little time remaining, Davenport elected to abandon the game instead of waiting out the delay following a day that had already had a series of serious weather issues across the region and state.

The win crowned Wimberley as district champions of one of the strongest districts in the state of Texas.

“This is probably the closest district since I have been here,” Nute said. “Last year, we had all of the district teams meet up again in the regional quarter finals, so I think that shows how strong our district is.”

That strength certainly showed in the first round of the playoffs on Friday. Wimberley beat Eastside Memorial 9-0 after scoring eight goals in the first half.

Ella Sandoval and Emily Thames each scored three goals. Izzy Franchione, Selah Jones and Yaretzy Ramos each scored one.

Wimberley faced Pleasanton on Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press. The pair played in the first game of the season with Wimberley winning 7-1. If the Lady Texans win, they will advance to the Regional Quarterfinals against the winner of Davenport and La Vernia. The game is expected to be held on Friday.
