For Dwain York, you might say the gravitational pull towards education was strong. It began teaching mathematics and coaching football in the high plains of West Texas and eastern New Mexico, made a short detour through the Permian Basin oilfields, and took root 25 years ago in the Wimberley Valley.

Many said it couldn’t be done or that it was a mistake to have a glass-working studio situated right outside Wimberley.

When Blue Hole Regional Park was originally constructed, the trail that winds through the park was not properly graded the larger slopes. That, combined with decomposed granite laid on top of weed barrier cloth, has caused severe washout to portions of the trail during heavier rain events.

Summer Reading Program Kick Off

Wimberley GumboFest ‘22 took place at Cypress Falls Swimming Hole in Woodcreek. The fourth annual event drew competition cookers from Texas and Louisiana, as well as over 600 hungry festival-goers from across the state. Thirteen teams submitted entries of the famous Cajun dish known for its difficulty to master. Chicken, sausage, seafood, duck and even rabbit gumbos were painstakingly prepared onsite early in the morning to be tasted by the seven highly experienced judges. In the end, Erin Morgan, of Drifts on the Bayou cook team, took home the first place trophy, with Mark Jones, of Cookin’ with Scrapps, and Kyle Durand, of Bayou Kyle’s Crawfish Crew, placing second and third respectively. Jones was the first place winner of the inaugural WCCA gumbo cookoff in 2019.

A terrific way to beat the heat this Saturday is to attend Wimberley Market Day on June 4. Why swelter in the heat doing work around the house when you can come to the beautiful and tree-covered Market Day Lions Field and shop outdoors in the shade? All of the shopping, eating and drinking is outdoors, so you will enjoy the gentle summer breeze. And don’t forget that there are always ten concessions nearby where you can get your soft drinks, a cool beer, sangria and your favorite wine. It’s the Wimberley Way to beat the rising temperatures of summer.

The Wimberley Players are excited to announce their third season of outdoor movies including Disney-Pixar’s animated adventure Up, rated PG, on June 4, the Baz Luhrmann musical, Moulin Rouge, rated PG-13, on June 17, and the classic favorite The Princess Bride, rated PG, on June 18.

Get ready for the laughs as the Starlight Symphony Orchestra has a special concert series on the stage. On June 3 and 4, the orchestra will kick off their “LOL” (Laugh Out Loud) concert series.

Because this is the Keep Wimberley Beautiful (KWB) column, you may wonder how KWB gets the money to fund all its projects. They award grants for beautification projects such as the kiosk up on Hilltop Park on RR 12, planting seeds on roadsides and school grounds, decorations around town, refurbishing Welcome to Wimberley signs, refurbishing Martha Knies Park, some Emily Ann plantings, funding various trash and recycle receptacles and so much more.
