Bonsai cultivation, the horticultural practice of miniaturizing trees as a representation of nature, is more than a thousand years old.

Wimberley Restaurant Week, a celebration to recognize the community’s unique restaurants and their top chefs, kicks off in July. Eight restaurants are on the menu: The Wimberley Café, Marco’s Italian, The Carvery, Community Pizza, The Supper Club of Wimberley, Hildee’s, The Let Go and Fish Tales.

Pedernales Electric Cooperative is inviting students entering kindergarten through third grade to participate in the cooperative’s annual Solar Car Derby Day.

Wimberley’s Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Freedom Canines to build a training deck for the service dogs they train to assist people needing their specialized skills.

“The things that inspire me vary,” said Nita Dixon, a New Braunfels mixed media artist and painter who shows her work at Art on 12 in Wimberley. “Sometimes it’s landscapes or water or skies, and sometimes it’s shapes. For a while, I was consumed by the shape of old trucks until I finished studying it in my mind’s eye.”

Joining celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Selena Gomez and Ryan Gosling, kids at the Katherine Anne Porter School have their very own Emotional Support Animal in the form of Mistii, a 12-weekold black and gray tabby kitten.

Riffs, Roams and Raves:

Despite early morning rain clouds, the seventh annual Blanco River Songwriter Festival went off without a hitch, boasting a well-curated list of performers Nine musical acts took the stage in the historic Fischer Hall, an expansive wood building built at the turn of last century by a master carpenter from New Braunfels. According to Fischer historian Lewis Smith, Al Kloepper was known for crafting strong and graceful arches which continue to distinguish the hall’s vaulted ceiling. Spacious with wood floors and large barntype windows, the building was a fitting partner for the event’s acoustics. More than one person compared the building to the inside of a guitar.

More Mexican cuisine is coming to Wimberley this month with the opening of a sit-down restaurant, Corazon de Mexico.
