Longtime Wimberley resident Austin Vaughan, of Sign Crafters, received a Community Excellence award in November for his work with Keep Wimberley Beautiful as well as the city’s signage.
Vaughan, a 2005 graduate of Wimberley High School, works for his family’s sign company in San Marcos. He originally stepped in to help replace the “Welcome to Wimberley” sign on the drive in from San Marcos on Ranch Road 12, right before the Blanco River Bridge. The sign had been ruined in the February 2021 freeze, and the Wimberley community had voiced its desire for a similar-looking replacement.
“It’s not so much that the sign represents all that is Wimberley,” Vaughan said. “It has just been a part of Wimberley for so long that you’ve got to try to preserve the town’s image where you can.”
With this project under his belt, Vaughan moved on to the next: designing and installing the city’s new wayfinding signs. These have since popped up around town, thanks to Vaughan’s handiwork and dedication, with directional arrows to key locations such at the Wimberley Square, public parking and parks.
Also thanks to his intentional design, these wayfinding signs have become not only a helpful guide for visitors and tourists but also a symbol of Wimberley’s rolling landscape.
