Sweep of week helps playoff positioning

Wimberley and Boerne were tied in the district standings. At least they were before Friday’s game.

Wimberley and Boerne were tied in the district standings. At least they were before Friday’s game.

“This was a must win for us to make sure we are sealing our fate for the playoffs,” Head Coach Stephanie Barthels said.

The last time these two teams played, Boerne walked off the volleyball court with a win. Barthels didn’t feel like the Texans had played up to their potential during that game, and it was time to find out for sure.

In a hotly contested first set, Wimberley hung on to a 27-25 win, but Boerne fired back with a 19-25 win to tie it up in the second.

“We swung a lot better this time,” Barthels said. “We were really good on defense.”

Junior Cortlyn Davis came in and helped spark the offensive in the third and fourth sets.

“She kept us in the last two and found a way to put the ball away,” Barthels said. “She kept us alive in times we really needed to find a way to score. We gave her the ball, and she did a wonderful job of finding the floor. It was perfect timing too, because it was her birthday.”

Wimberley would go on to narrowly win the next two sets 25-23 to close out the victory. They improved to 6-4 in district play while Boerne fell to 4-5. Laney Hennessee led the team in kills with 19. Jesse Weeks and Carson Peoples tied with 20 assists each. Rhagen Masur led the team in digs with 28.

The game followed a blow out on Tuesday last week that the Texans handed to Bandera. After a two hour drive, the volleyball team was ready to unleash and closed out the Bulldogs in three straight sets winning 2512, 25-13 and 25-13.

“They were down two starters including their best player,” Barthels said. “… They didn’t have a lot of action going on. Our girls did great. We had a lot of intensity. We did a great job of staying focused…. Everybody got into the game and we sealed it.”

Hennessee led the team in blocks with four, aces with three and digs with seven.

Wimberley improved their overall record to 27-10 on the season. They were off Tuesday night before taking on Navarro at home on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
