The reigning UIL 4A Team Tennis State Champions are gearing up for another run as they ran away with the Area title in a 10-0 finish against Needville High School.
“We had a couple of close matches in that one, but we were just a stronger team than they were,” Head Coach Kenny Gustafson said.
The team won all seven doubles matches and closed out the victory with three singles wins.
The team is led by senior John Moore, who has been to state two years in a row.
“He is one of the strongest players in 4A on the boys’ side,” Gustafson said. “There are also three strong returners on the girls’ side with Ella Malone, who went to state in the mixed doubles last year, as well as the doubles team of Gwen Pierce and Sarah Cook.”
The Regional Quarterfinals were rained out on Monday and the match was set for Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press. Wimberley will take on long-time tennis nemesis Fredericksburg once again. They played earlier in the district season with Wimberley coming out on top 11-8 in what Gustafson said was a “super close match.”
Wimberley is ranked No. 6 in the state with Fredericksburg checking in at No. 9.
“It is going to come down to the last match,” Gustafson said.
