Emily Thames landed a hat trick on the way to leading the Lady Texans to victory in the first district game of the year.
“It was a very physical game,” Soccer Coach Brinton Nute said. “Despite their record, we knew Canyon Lake would be a tough game, because it’s a rivalry game. Straight from the first whistle it was physical. It was high tempo and high paced. But due to us play ing Burnet and Giddings in similar games, I felt we played with physicality quite well.”
Thames opened things up with the first two scores of the game to give Wimberley the lead over Canyon Lake. Then, Ella Sandoval scored with three minutes to go in the first half.
“That was a big momentum changer,” Nute said. “We broke down the right hand side. Ella got a cross from Emily, and she put it in the bottom right hand corner.”
While Canyon Lake was able to score in the second half, Thames scored again completing the hat trick before Haley Lopez got onto the score sheet with the fifth goal of the day for the Lady Texans.
“The pleasing thing was that we reacted,” Nute said. “We were kind of at a crossroads there, and we stood up and dominated the rest of that second half. In the end it was pleasing. The whole team got minutes. It is always nice to start district with a win.”
Wimberley played against Great Heart Northern Oaks on Tuesday after the Wimberley View’s time of press. The next game is scheduled at home on Friday versus Boerne.
