Saturday, August 6, is the day to mark your calendar for more summer fun at Wimberley Market Day. Treasure hunting, live entertainment, and savory eats and sweet treats await locals and visitors alike. Wimberley Lions Barbecue (concession 7) is located next to the main pavilion at Lions Field. Lions and community volunteers serve this Market Day staple from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., or until they sell out.

Lion Richard Newsum said, “Over the years, Lions barbecue has earned a reputation for its high standards in the quality of meat served as well as the tastiness provided. Customers are able to choose from a variety of items that include one or two meat plates, sandwiches, baked potatoes and sausage. Drinks are lemonade, tea and water.”

He continued, “It takes two teams of dedicated Lions and volunteers to get everything ready, and onto the plate of a hungry customer.” The teams include 4 slicers, 2 grinders, 2 sandwich makers, 2 dish washers and 4 tending to the meat and beans. Newsum added, “They also prepare turkey legs and bratwurst for other concessions.”

He explained, “The quantity prepared for each Market Day varies some from month to month,. The most popular item is the concession’s signature dish, prime beef brisket. In a given month, the production team will prepare a minimum of 35 and sometimes as many as 80 briskets. Seasoning is done immediately after receipt, followed by placing on the grill to allow the smoking process to begin. They cook all night with removal Market Day morning. Before being removed, they are checked for internal temperature. If that meets the standard, they are then wrapped in butcher paper and placed on a ‘resting’ rack before being placed in an insulated cooler that allows them to stay at temperature before slicing.” Newsum concluded,

“At closing time, both barbecue teams can wipe their brows knowing that every pound of product sold that day has helped the Wimberley Lions Club meet its goal of serving the needs of the Wimberley Valley.”

Besides all of the tasty food and snacks offered by each concession stand, Lions Field offers musical entertainment beginning around 11:00 a.m. Monte Good headlines at the Pavilion stage. Alias Newman plays at the Shady Grove stage. And, Jeff Jacobs plays at the Hill Top stage.

Wimberley Market Day is held on the First Saturday of each month, rain or shine. August’s shopping hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lions Field is located off FM 2325, about a mile from the Wimberley Square. The $5.00 donation accepted at the Lions Club’s parking lots helps to fund the various grants and scholarships distributed by the Wimberley Lions Club.
