Migratory bird day seminar returns

What better way to celebrate Wimberley’s newest certification as a Texas Bird City than with a seminar about the heroics of bird migration? “Explore the Wonders of Migratory Birds” on May 10 cracks open the fascinating world of bird migration.

Wimberley serves as a crucial rest stop for birds on the wing, notably for the Black-capped Vireo and the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler. Expert speakers will talk about cultivating bird-friendly habitats and how to join conservation efforts to protect them.

“Where birds thrive, people prosper,” said Chloe Crumley, Audubon Texas engagement manager. “Human-dominated landscapes can support functioning ecosystems. Bird City Texas is an opportunity for communities to commit to standards that elevate urban areas to be ecologically richer and in turn offer us more beautiful, resilient and healthful places to live.”

Audubon Texas and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department team up to award Bird City status to select communities across the state. Wimberley was chosen for being “a champion of community- driven conservation and for prioritizing dark-sky initiatives and native plant restoration to support local and migratory birds.”

As a Bird City, programs like “Explore the Wonders of Migratory Birds” seminar helps protect birds and their habitats through science- based bird initiatives and community- centric action.

Designed for avid birders and the curious alike, the seminar is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wimberley Community Center, 14068 RR 12. The cost to attend is $15 per person; ages 12 and under are free.
