Trash in town is increasing; clean up April 12

The amount of trash is increasing around our town. Keep Wimberley Beautiful has been completing litter surveys of stretches of road and we have data from the last few years showing the increase in plastic, aluminum cans, cardboard, polystyrene, glass bottles and construction materials.

It is estimated now that 362 million pieces of litter accumulate on Texas roads annually – this is in a state which has a population of approximately 31 million. That means nearly 12 pieces of litter per person winds up on our roads.

Don’t be the cause of roadside trash. Secure your truck beds and take your litter home with you. Consider carrying a bag with you as you walk around your neighborhood or visit one of our beautiful parks. Picking up one piece of litter adds up. As the wildflowers start to bloom, it would be wonderful to see them without trash all around them.

April is the “Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off” and KWB will be entering data from all our roadside cleanups in the TX litter cleanup database.

On April 12, KWB will clean non-Adopt-a-Highway roads around town and we would love for volunteers to come forward to help. If you can volunteer April 12, please email us at keepwimberleybeautiful@ gmail.com and we shall arrange supplies: grabbers, reflective vests, and trash bags.

Also on April 12, the City of Wimberley is teaming up with Keep Wimberley Beautiful, Texas Disposal Systems and local metal recyclers to host the Spring Community Clean Up Day.

This is an opportunity to dispose of your bulky waste, at no cost, in dumpsters parked for the morning in the Lions parking lot, opposite the entrance to Market Days on FM 2325. The event will run from 8 a.m. until noon, or until the dumpsters and rollup truck are full, which could be earlier. Items allowed are sofas, stoves, refrigerators, water tanks, washing machines, dryers, A/C units, sinks, toilets, furniture, and other waste materials, certified as Freon-free.

Prohibited are any hazardous items, chemical compounds, mixtures or substances – no paint, motor oil, gasoline, etc. – mattresses, box springs, brush or tires.

KWB will try to accommodate everyone, but we cannot accept material from commercial entities. Unfortunately, KWB couldn’t secure a date for the Shred-It truck this Spring, but there is a Shred-It event in San Marcos for San Marcos and Hays County Residents, April 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at 630 E. Hopkins. No material from commercial businesses will be accepted.
