I learned years ago not to make New Year’s resolutions. My resolve stops in early January, often on January 2, but periodically, I set some goals for myself. My latest goal is to get healthier. My brain agrees but my body seems to be happy keeping the status quo. I am doing it anyway.
My first step to getting healthier is to walk more. My dogs are ecstatic. As I was getting ready for my first extended morning walk, I could not find my best walking shoes. I found one of them so I decided that it’s probably better to wear the one with a “not as good” walking shoe, than just wearing two “just ok” shoes. The dogs and I headed off on our extended 15 minute walk. My gait was a little lop-sided, but at least one foot felt great and we made it the whole 15 minutes.
The next morning as I was getting ready for our extended walk, I felt a sharp pain in my calf on one side and my hip on the other. I decided to wear two “just ok” shoes this time. I was only able to get to the end of my driveway before my body said we are done. I let the dogs sniff for 15 minutes; that should count for something. I needed a few days of rest.
Step two of my health journey was to eliminate caffeine, so I switched to decaf coffee. The first morning, I had a slight headache. By day 3 I was searching in the kitchen and underwear drawers for one caffeine coffee pod. Not finding any, I decided to lie on the sofa and skip the dog’s morning walk.
I wasn’t giving up so I added one more step. I bought weights, a rowing machine and a treadmill. I knew I wouldn’t go to a gym but if the gym was in my house, I could access it any time.
Well the gym is in my house, unused. I’m thinking I will start my health quest journey again tomorrow, if my body agrees.
