Wimberley’s newest wine shop, WineBerley, is hosting one of the winemakers in their collection of wines, for a tasting open to the public on April 26, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Jean-Victor Schutz, owner of Domaine Ruhlmann Schutz in Alsace and Château Valmont in the Corbières region of Languedoc in France, will discuss his wines.
Schutz’s visit marks an unusual opportunity for Wimberley to learn the history of two wellknown French estates.
WineBerley will be serving wines from Domaine Ruhlmann- Schutz – Crémant d’Alsace Brut, Rosé Sylvaner, Delicat “S” Riesling Cuvée and Jean-Charles Pinot Noir Mosaïque.
The story of the Domaine Ruhlmann Schutz dates to 1688 when a Hungarian knight settled in the picturesque village of Dambach-la-Ville in Alsace. The family’s winemaking journey began centuries later, in 1960, when Marthe and Jean-Charles Ruhlmann started planting vines alongside their traditional farming activities.
By 1980, the couple made the decision to dedicate themselves entirely to viticulture, leaving livestock and agriculture behind to focus on crafting fine wines. That same year, their son André joined the family business, bringing fresh energy and dedication to the domaine.
Following the passing of Jean-Charles in 1994, the next generation stepped in to carry on the family’s legacy.
André, along with his wife Laurence, and his sister Christine with her husband, Jean-Victor Schutz, officially formed Domaine Ruhlmann-Schutz. Together, they combined tradition with innovation, expanding the domaine’s reputation for producing Alsace wines.
In 2016, the family expanded their horizons by acquiring Château Valmont in the Corbières region of Languedoc. With a commitment to sustainable viticulture, they converted the estate to organic farming. In 2021, the next generation stepped in to continue the legacy. Thomas, Antoine, Louise- Anne, and JacquesÉmile — the children of Christine and Jean-Victor, and Laurence and André – joined their parents to work at both Domaine Ruhlmann Schutz and Château Valmont.
In the sun-drenched Corbières region, Château Valmont is known for its bold reds and aromatic whites. The combination of organic farming practices and Jean-Victor’s dedication to crafting wines has made the estate a standout in the region.
Schitz’s visit offers a rare chance for locals to taste and learn about the wines first-hand. From the crisp, aromatic Rieslings and Gewürztraminers of Alsace, to the robust, organic Grenache and Syrah blends from Languedoc, WineBerley is able to showcase the depth and diversity of the winemaker’s portfolio.
WineBerley is located at 13615 RR12. There is no cost to attend the event.
