4th Chair Project at Wimberley ARTSPACE makes a statement

The 4th Chair Project opens April 4 at ARTSPACE, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, 111 River Rd., Suite 100. Exhibiting artists will be on hand to talk with visitors about their work and elaborate on the event that inspired the show. Refreshments will be served.

ARTSPACE invited area artists to create a chair, a 4th chair, to symbolize the missing piece of today’s public school system - art.

Their creations are twoand three-dimensional, functional and not, literal and abstract.

The 4th Chair Project was an idea born from the construction of four sculptural chairs that projectART designed with their practicum student last Spring. After setting up three chairs in the front patio of ARTSPACE, there wasn’t enough space for the fourth chair to be displayed. Students and patrons then began to inquire, “Where’s the 4th chair?”

It occurred to projectART board members that the absence of the 4th chair is a metaphor for the absence of robust art programs in the public school system. projectART was created to fill this absence, using its classes and programming to fulfill its mission to make more creative opportunities available for the youth of Wimberley. In short, projectART is the fourth chair, and The 4th Chair Project encapsulates this idea.

Participating artists are Lance Letscher, McKay Otto, Gary Weeks, Andy Rihn, Jennifer Moore, Andy Coolquit, Hollis Hammonds, Beau James, Heather Carter and Emmett Cole. The exhibition will show until May 4.
