VFW awards scholarships

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6441 announced the local winners of the annual Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen scholarship programs.

The winning Voice of Democracy audio essay on the topic, “Is America today our forefathers’ vision?”, was senior Savannah Browning, who received a $2,000 scholarship. Browning also placed third in the district. Second place, and a $1,500 scholarship went to sophomore Sidera Skiles, and third place and a $1,000 scholarship was awarded to senior Chloe Swindle. Swindle is a two-time previous scholarship winner.

In the Patriot’s Pen contest for middle- schoolers, on the theme of “My Voice in America’s Democracy,” the winning essayist was Sofia Brassow, who received a $200 award. In second place was Phoenix Wilde, who received $150, and third place with $100, was Esha Dutta. At district-level, the three essayists also finished first, second and third place respectively.

During the ceremony, the VFW Post 6441 commended the young scholars for their patriotism and outstanding oration and writing skills. A special thanks was given to the parents and teachers of the winners, and to the Wimberley Library Judging Team of Patricia Bradshaw, Margie Langmead, and Kali Page.
