Who Thought These Were Good Ideas?

There are a few ideas that companies must have thought would be good for consumers. I disagree.

The first one is single- ply toilet paper. I have accidentally purchased this on occasion and have been forced to use it in public restrooms.

Did the inventor think we wouldn’t notice how thin the sheets were? One needs to use at least twice as many of these see-through sheets than normal toilet paper. When I am trying to find the beginning of the roll, I feel like a hamster on a wheel that goes round and round while trying to grasp the first sheet. And, if I have a sneeze coming and must grab these sheets, it’s like sneezing into fairy dust. I just hope there is no one within three feet of me.

The second idea I find frustrating is the multiple safety caps on some bottles. I understand that companies are trying to keep us safe, but when over-the-counter cold pills are enclosed in plastic, which is then enclosed in cardboard, it seems a bit excessive. Opening the bottle cannot be done without scissors or a pocket knife, which I now carry full-time.

When I finally cut the container out of its mummy’s wrapping, I can open the lid – if there isn’t some fancy way to turn the lid to get it to open.

When, after much exertion, I get the lid off, I find a paper safety skin over the bottle opening. I am again stymied by trying to find the tiny little flap that one is supposed to grab to pull it off. By this time, I am fully motivated to stab a hole through the safety skin. When I finally peel it away, in pieces, to reveal my cold medicine, I am now either sick enough to go to the E.R. or feeling better so that I don’t need it.

Don’t even get me started on those “resealable” double zipper food bags.
