Wimberley teenager dies following gunshot wound

A 16-year-old girl from Driftwood was shot and killed on Jan. 28. The Hays County Sheriff’s Office said that the incident was isolated and that the other juvenile involved has been detained.

“Both juveniles resided in the home,” a Hays County Sheriff spokesperson stated.

The detained juvenile is 14 years old. Wimberley Independent School District identified the deceased as a Wimberley High School sophomore. The spokesperson clarified that being detained is "not an affirmation of guilt" and the case is still under investigation.

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office stated that officers were called to a home in Driftwood at 4:56 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28 for a person suffering a gunshot wound. Life saving measures were attempted but were not successful.

“Upon arrival, deputies determined the juvenile male had discharged a firearm striking the juvenile female,” Hays County Sheriff’s Office said. “The male juvenile was detained and transported to the Hays County Juvenile Detention Center.”

Wimberley ISD said that counselors will be available for students.

“In a community as close-knit as ours, this tragic loss can have a significant effect on many of our students,” WISD said in a statement to families. “Our WISD Counseling staff are available to students and will continue to provide a safe space at school for those who need it. We are grateful to our many community partners who are helping to assist with additional grief counseling services for our students and staff.”
