It’s that time of year

I’m not talking about decorating or baking; it’s time to find the gifts I bought for Christmas. I often find and purchase perfect little gifts for people during the year. I store them where I can find them in December.

Unfortunately, finding them is like going on an Easter egg hunt in my house. In some places around the house, I find multiples of the same gift. I guess I thought they were worth purchasing a few times. I refuse to blame my poor memory.

After finding most of the gifts (I guess it is most of them, since I don’t remember all that I purchased), I then have to figure out which gift was purchased for which person. Next I have to try to remember if I already gave them the same gift last year, or the year before that?

Some years I am semi-organized and will write down the gift I gave to each person. It would be best if I saved those lists from year to year, but if I did, I probably couldn’t find them when I needed them, so why clutter up the house with lists?

I finally gather the gifts that I found and lay them on the bed with a person’s name above each. Now that I see each gift, I wonder why I thought they would be perfect for that person? I realize that a gift I bought a year or two ago for a teenager, doesn’t look as exciting this year. A teenager’s tastes change day to day, not year to year.

The good thing about my family is that no one, except sometimes my daughter, questions the gifts they receive from me. Only once did my daughter say, “Thanks, I will put this with the other two you gave me.” Some of my relatives live out of town, so I am thankful that I am not around when they open my gifts. I need to stop buying so many perfect gifts in advance.

Now I have to do a house search to find this year’s Christmas gifts.
