Wimberley’s season came to an end last Friday as the Texans fell to the Waco La Vega Pirates 62-35.
Wimberley finishes the season with a 12-3 overall record.
The Texans struck first after receiving the ball to start the game. Driving down to the 13-yard line, Wimberley scored on the read-option play when running back Maverick Jacobs took the handoff and reached the endzone untouched for the touchdown. Kicker Bo Holman added the extra point to make it a 7-0 game.
The Pirates soon answered back. With the ball at the Pirate 49yard line, La Vega quarterback Courtney Parr hit Jabarie Thorton on the slant pass before scoring the 51-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7-7.
The offense was unable to get going forcing the Texans to punt the ball back to La Vega.
The Pirates struck again when La Vega running back Bryson Roland scored from 13-yards out, allowing the Pirates to take their first lead of the game at 14-7.
The Texan offense again was unable to find momentum and Wimberley was forced to punt again.
La Vega was able to strike again. Going down to the 33-yard line, Parr hit wide receiver Daylon Pullen for the 33-yard touchdown and extended the lead 21-7.
Following another stalled out drive for the Texan offense, La Vega again added to their lead in the second quarter.
Roland once again found the endzone, scoring from the sixyard line and pushed the Pirate lead to 28-7.
Despite falling down early, Wimberley refused to give in. On their next offensive possession, the Texans drove down to inside the five-yard line before quarterback Cody Stoever punched it in from three-yards out, making the score 28-14.
Once again, La Vega had a response. The Pirates drove down to the inside the 10-yard line before Parr ran for the nine-yard touchdown on the read-option play, extending the lead to 35-14.
Following a big kickoff return from wide receiver Nolan Waida that crossed midfield, the Texans answered back.
Wimberley again made a long drive, going down to the Pirate two-yard line before Stoever bulldozed his way into the endzone for the touchdown, cutting the lead down to 35-21.
The Code Red Defense was able to get their first stop of the game, allowing the Texan offense to come back onto the field and try to make it a one possession game before halftime.
But the Texans couldn’t find the endzone as La Vega entered halftime up 35-21.
In the opening drive of the second half, La Vega pushed the ball down to the Texan twoyard line before scoring again on a Roland two-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 42-21.
La Vega then kicked a surprise onside kick and recovered the ball.
Pirate running back Elbert Jones punched it in from the one-yard for the touchdown as the lead was pushed to 49-21.
But the Texans didn’t give up. Wimberley drove down to the La Vega two-yard line before Stoever scored his third rushing touchdown of the night, making it a 49-28 game.
La Vega answered back with a passing touchdown in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 56-28.
Again Wimberley re- fused to give in. Going down to the 33-yard line, Stoever hit fullback Ty Thames on the jump pass for the touchdown, making it a 56-35 game.
The Pirates added their final touchdown of the night to seal the game at 62-35.
Stoever passed for 116 yards and touchdown while rushing for 162 yards and three touchdowns.
Bryson Anderson was the lead wide receiver for the Texans with two catches for 48 yards. Holman was perfect on point after attempts, going 5-5.
