Household Hazardous Waste

Keep Wimberley Beautiful is affiliated with Keep Texas Beautiful. One of their goals is to reduce waste, especially Household Hazardous Waste. Recently I went to the Hays County Household Hazardous Waste facility (HHW) drop off. They are open on Fridays from noon to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Hays county HHW facility is located in San Marcos, 634 E Hopkins, across the street from HEB near the railroad. There is a small sign indicating the entrance to the facility. Stop at the sign indicating the appropriate place to stop your vehicle. You will be asked for identification to show you are a Hays County resident. A driver’s license is sufficient. You do not get out of your vehicle, and are requested to put your materials in a container in your trunk or bed of a truck.

The purpose of the collection of HHW is to keep materials from contaminating the environment. Many hazardous household materials are forbidden to be placed in the garbage: liquid paints and cleaners, oven cleaners, light bulbs, garden poisons, pest poisons, vehicle motor oil, antifreeze, Household batteries, car batteries, cell phones, smoke detectors — to name a few. All of these materials are accepted at the Hays County HHW.

A complete list of items accepted and those not accepted are listed in their brochure: ci.san-marcos. tx.us/Document-Center/View/41950/ Household-Hazardo us-Waste-Facility-Brochure?bidId= The brochure is helpful in telling where items that they do not accept, such as tires, old TVs, and computers, can be accepted in Hays County.

I keep an old cardboard box with my household hazardous wastes in it as they accumulate and then periodically put it in my trunk to drop off in San Marcos. They will not take containers over 5 gallons or commercial waste.
