There’s a new children’s author in town and her book features some of our beloved Hill Country creatures.
“What If You Fly?”, written by Wimberley resident Cris Peterson, depicts these young animals facing some of their first challenges.
If the title sounds familiar, Cris was inspired by a popular poem by Erin Hanson (included on the last page of her book). The birth of her first grandchild, Finley, has also proven to be a constant source of ideas and inspiration.
“After my grandson was born, I realized that every day presented a different kind of ‘first step’ for him. . . from rolling over or sitting up, to trying new foods and solving new problems.”
She initially planned to include the subtitle of, “First Steps in the Texas Hill Country” but was afraid that may not resonate with people outside of our area.
It was important to Cris that the artwork in her book be worthy to hang on a wall. . . original art and not computer generated. She hired watercolor artist Krystal Kramer to fulfill this need who was able to capture the beauty of the Wimberley Valley. Krystal, a self-taught artist, started painting in 2017 and quickly developed an appreciation for nature and the beauty that surrounds her.
“Krystal took my story boards and notes and really made everything come to life.”
Working closely with Krystal, the publication process took about a year to complete. Though this was Cris’ first literary attempt, it likely won’t be her last.
“My grandson and I are very close, so the ideas for new, fun books just keep coming. It [the publishing aspect] wasn’t easy but I think I learned a lot along the way and I’m hopeful the next one will go more smoothly.”
While the book is aimed at two- to sevenyear- olds, the message resonates with people of all ages who may be facing something for the first time.
The book is available on Amazon.com where it has been a bestseller among children’s books with baby animals. Locally, the book is for sale at Wimberley Market Days, Booth 362 (at Gate #3). Copies, including autographed versions, are available directly from the author’s website at: whatif- you-fly.square.site The cost is $10.
