The state title is back where it belongs - Wimberley.
After falling down 0-2 to the Canyon Randall Raiders, the Texans did what Texans do. They responded with the will of a school that came into the game with six state championships and rallied to pull off the reverse sweep defeating Randall 3-2 [20-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-23, 15-9] to capture the UIL 4A Division II State Championship.
It is the Texans first state title since 2007 and the program’s seventh title overall.
Wimberley found themselves in a deep hole after dropping the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-17. It was the first time in the postseason and the first since October that the Texans dropped a set.
However, the Texans rallied in the third set to keep their state championship hopes alive, winning 25-14.
In the fourth set, Randall jumped out to a 12-5 lead and looked well on their way to winning the title. However, the Texans responded once again by going on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 12-12.
Randall extended their lead to 16-12 but a 6-2 run by Wimberley tied the game up once more at 18-18.
Going back and forth, Randall was again seemingly on the brink of winning the state championship, taking a 23-22 lead.
But Wimberley dug deep with another critical run, going on a 3-0 run, capped off with a kill by junior Lili Sandoval to win the fourth set 25-23 and force the decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Texans came charging out of the gates by taking a huge 8-2 lead. However, the Raiders were able to rebound and cut the lead down to 8-6.
Following a timeout, Wimberley regrouped and went on a short 4-1 run to push their lead to 12-7.
Randall answered back by scoring two more points to make it 12-9, but it wasn’t enough.
Wimberley ended the fifth set on a 3-0 to win the fifth set 15-9 and capture the state championship.
Senior Laney Hennessee led the team in kills with 18, followed by junior Addison Parks with 10. Sandoval was third with nine. Junior Carson Peoples was first in assists with 18 followed by junior Skyler Herring with 17.
On defense Hennessee led the team in digs with 15 to complete the double-double. Senior Rhagen Masur was second with 14 followed by sophomore Addie Laney 13. Herring and Peoples were tied for fourth place with 11 digs each.
