Where’s my Genie?

Is It Just Me?

Join Wimberley humorist Susan Rigby as she attempts to navigate “the small stuff.”

I sometimes look around for a cool bottle that might house a genie. One of these days, I will rub that bottle and out will pop a genie. Of course, all genies give you three wishes. I know that many would ask for riches, long life, or good health. Those are wonderful wishes, but I would like something more immediate so I can see if they actually are granted.

My first wish would be to have the ability to put things back together that I have taken apart.

Along that same line, to read and understand directions to items I have purchased. Everything seems to come in hundreds of pieces that you first have to match each piece to the “before you start” instructions. To have everything I put together, stay together and not lean or wobble, would make me so happy.

My second wish would be telling my body that if I am sick, I should not want to eat. Many people complain about not being able to even look at food when they have something as minor as a cold. My body thinks that if I just eat a little more, I will feel better. I never do, but that doesn’t stop me. Genie, make this wish come true before I have to go up another dress size.

My third wish would be that my phone dictation will always hear and print everything, just the way I say it. I did not say “puke you fool,” but “plenty of food.” Most people start their day by settling in with their coffee and a crossword or Sudoku puzzle. My friends sit down with their coffee and my text messages to try to decipher what I am saying. I do try to read what I had written before I send it, but I really believe that my phone gets a lot of pleasure out of changing my words just before I hit Send. Luckily, some enjoy the challenge, but some no longer speak to me.

Dear Genie, these will be my three wishes if I can ever find your bottle.
