In ultimate campy style, the second annual Mrs. Roper Romp was a roaring success as women dressed as Mrs. Roper, a character from the 1970s TV sitcom, “Three’s Company,” lunched and sipped their way across Wimberley.
According to Liz Buchta, coordinator of the second Annual Wimberley Mrs. Roper Romp, “There were anywhere from 80 to 100 Mrs. Ropers who romped to multiple bars and restaurants to support our local businesses.” The romp, she said, “doubled in size from the inaugural event last year.”
Dressed in flowered, ankle- length caftans, red wigs and oversized glasses, participants strove to portray the wisecracking, perpetually unfulfilled Mrs. Roper, played by actor Audra Lindley. Playing opposite Lindley as her exasperated husband, Stanley, was Norman Fell. His role, wrote one Quora contributor, portrayed “the common trope of the era to be unattracted to your wife once she ages and loses her beauty.”
Instead of turning to his wife, Stanley became a voyeur to the antics of Chrissie and Janet, played by Suzanne Somers and Joyce DeWitt, two of the “Three’s Company” roommates. The third roommate was the late John Ritter.
Owing to the popularity of the event, it is likely that Wimberley can expect to see another romp next year.
