Embarrassing moments

Is It Just Me?

— Susan Rigby, Guest Columnist

I know that everyone has embarrassing moments. I might have more than most.

Often, I go out to breakfast with my male friend. I don’t know if he is just too nice, or too shy because he never tells me when there is something in my teeth or a large drippy egg on my shirt. One day, I wore some new pants that had the long sticker down the leg, proudly showing off my size. He never said a word.

I know that my female friends always point out each other’s drips, facial food and other problem areas, to keep us from being embarrassed. Is it a male thing?

Recently, I met my male friend in the parking lot and he walked behind me as I said hello and waved to people on the way to the restaurant. After a nice breakfast, he walked behind me, back to my car. As I lifted my leg to get in the car, I noticed and felt the slit up my back side. It was large and obviously not a new slit, but again, he never said a word. I was hoping that the people who noticed it (and didn’t say a word) also noticed that I had clean underwear on.

I had one more stop to make at the grocery store. I was out of ice cream. I decided that I could pull my tee shirt down far enough to hide the tear, so I went shopping. It wasn’t easy to carry my purse, the ice cream and a few other items I decided I needed and hold down my shirt, but I did the best I could.

After wandering around the store, holding down my shirt, I got in line to pay. A no-nonsense young man was standing behind me and said in a too-loud voice, “You’ve got a big hole in your pants.”

Now, I believe that young man was mostly raised correctly to be honest, but maybe quietly honest would have been better. I am just hoping he noticed that at least my underwear was clean.
