Wimberley Senior Citizen’s Activities, Inc., a non-profit organization formed in 1989, is on a mission to collect shoes for people of all ages, including children, who might not be able to afford new shoes. Through the “Shoes for Wimberley” campaign, they’re hoping that the generous citizens of Wimberley will open their closets and donate shoes they no longer need.
New, gently-used, well-used and mismatched shoes will be collected in boxes in locations around Wimberley marked by bright green signs that say, “Shoes for Wimberley.” Shoes can also be brought directly to the Thrift Shoppe at 14050 RR12, next to the Community Center. Shoes that are past their prime are sold to a wholesale firm who buys them by the pound.
A valuable asset to the community, the Thrift Shoppe, now in its tenth year, sells affordable items such as clothing for families, household items, gifts and other treasures. Through generous donations and purchases, the Thrift Shoppe revenue also provides funding needed to run the outreach programs of WSCAI and the Wimberley Senior Center.
As well as supporting the Wimberley Senior Center, WSCAI supports the “Circles of Friends” and “Wimberley on Wheels” programs.
The Senior Activity Center creates opportunities for socializing with educational programs and games for Wimberley residents aged 60 and above. The center has a spacious room with tables for games and for gathering with friends, as well as a kitchen with a coffee bar and refreshments and a living room with a fireplace for small meetings and other group activities.
The “Circles of Friends” program for clients with moderate memory loss offers an enriched curriculum of activities and provides a day of respite for family caregivers. Activities include exercise and movement, arts and crafts, live interactive music, storytelling and discussions of current events. Friends benefit by visiting each other and with program volunteers on a regular basis. Snacks and lunch are served during the 4-hour session. The group meets at the Community Center every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The “Wimberley on Wheels” program, which began operating a decade ago, offers rides to area destinations for activities such as grocery shopping, medical appointments, beauty and barber visits and the library. Seniors request appointments by calling at least 24 hours in advance. Advance appointments help volunteers, who provide the transportation, schedule efficiently.
