Sweet Tooth

Is It Just Me?

Join Wimberley humorist Susan Rigby as she attempts to navigate “the small stuff.”

I’ll admit, I do like my sweets, in any form. Instead of being upset when holiday candy is displayed months in advance, I am joyful that those large bags of treats are available so soon. I do try to limit the sugar by buying some candy I don’t really like but end up eating it anyway. Tastes change. Even though I only get three trick-ortreaters each year (my grandsons) I still buy the generous bags of candy, just in case.

But, things are changing. I had a dental procedure done last week and was told that for two weeks, the only things I could eat were pudding, yogurt, Jello, protein drinks and ice cream. Oh, and I could have broth with nothing in it. It sounded great for about three days, except for the broth. Day One consisted of yogurt, pudding, ice cream and a couple of spoonsful of broth. Day Two included a protein shake, yogurt, pudding and ice cream. I was not even allowed coffee, that might have cut the sugar a bit. It was something about the caffeine or coffee beans, I was too hungry to listen closely.

During my post-op visit, I talked the dentist into adding some non-sweet items because I was afraid my other teeth would fall out by the end of two weeks. He reluctantly added runny mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, and baby food (nope). When my kids were young, I never even tasted their baby food, and I wasn’t about to start now. It was not going to be on my meal plan.

I am now on Day Four of my two weeks of sweets for a healthier mouth. I did head to the grocery store to buy 15 cartons of instant mashed potatoes and six pints of ice cream. I hope people don’t think there is a shortage of instant mashed potatoes because I may need to buy more.

This diet may turn me against sugar. The good news is that there should be a surplus of half-price Halloween candy this year. You can thank me later.
