The Dragon Foundation at the Katherine Ann Porter public charter school in Wimberley are launching a fundraiser called the Dragon Festival from 1 to 6 p.m. October 19. The public is invited to attend, visit the campus and shop art vendors. The Mi Ranchito BBQ food truck will be available for hungry attendees and hardworking dragons.
Part two of the event, held at the Lions pavilion, features live music by Rebel Flesh, The Jake Levinson Band and the KAPS Rock Band. Tickets for the live music portion of the festival, which begins at 2:30 p.m., are $35. Music fans should enter at the Lions Market Days entrance, 601 FM2325, Suite A and look for the band under the Lions pavilion. Bring plenty of folding green, the Dragon Fest is a cash-only event.
The fundraiser seeks to raise critical funds for the grade-8through-12, free public charter school and to introduce members of the public to their programs. As an open enrollment charter, they take students from Wimberley and the surrounding areas such as Hays, Blanco, Comal, Travis and Williamson counties. Their classes are small and focused on the individual learner. Recent legislative changes and falling enrollment, about 30%, has left the alternative school with a shortfall of $300,000.
The KAPS Dragon Foundation was created, in part, to support the school by generating funds to supplement and eventually alleviate the financial strain brought on by limited state and federal funding. Their mission is to create a working relationship with the community to help support the school. This week’s Dragon Festival is designed to kick off that relationship.
To meet the challenge, eight new members recently joined the KAPS board to bring the total to 11 members. The new board members are former KAPS administrators, teachers, students and parents who are committed to the school’s revitalization.
