Playing their first home game in nearly a month, the Texans defeated the Salado Eagles 59-28 to stay undefeated in district play.
Head Coach Doug Warren and the Texans outscored Salado 42-0 in the first half before cruising to the victory.
“I thought we played our best game up to date,” Warren said. “We set the tone early in all three phases of the game. The first half was our best football to date. We were firing on all cylinders, being physical and having them on their heels. We got control of the game pretty early.”
The Texans struck first on special teams, with wide receiver Nolan Waida returning a punt 76 yards for the touchdown. Bo Holman tacked on the extra point kick to put Wimberley up 7-0.
Running back Maverick Jacobs scored the second touchdown of the night for the Texans, rushing from nine-yards out before forcing his way into the endzone. The score extended the lead to 14-0.
Going into the second quarter, the Texan offense continued to roll with quarterback Cody Stoever scoring from one yard out to make it a 21-0 game.
Following another stop by the vaunted Code Red Defense, the Texans struck again, as Stoever hit receiver Jace Morales for a 33yard touchdown. The touchdown extended the lead to 28-0.
Another stop by the Code Red Defense led to another score for Wimberley. Driving down to the three yard line, Stoever bulldozed his way into the endzone, extending the lead to 35-0.
Wimberley again got the ball back but with seconds remaining in the first half. Stoever struck again through the air, finding Bryce Anderson on a 48-yard touchdown pass, making it a 42-0 game.
A key for the Texans going into their game with Salado was play-ing at a high level while not letting the Eagles have a chance to stage a comeback.
“That’s one thing we talked about with our kids are traits of a championship team and what it looks like,” Warren said. “Championship teams, when they get somebody down, they don’t give them life or the opportunity to get back in [the game]. We challenged our kids to get their foot on the gas.”
Shutting out Salado’s offense in the first half, quarterback pressure was a key for the Code Red Defense slowing down the Eagles.
“They are very explosive offensively,” Warren said. ‘They like to get over the top of you with long passes. We really harped on that. We knew we had to get pressure on the quarterback, which is a given. It wasn’t always a sack but just getting around him when he threw the football and making him uncomfortable. I thought we did a good job of that.”
Jackson Parker and Josh Belanger tacked on two more touchdowns in the second half while Holeman booted a 38-yard field as Wimberley secured the 59-28 win.
The Texans go back on the road in a district showdown with the Jarrell Cougars. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
