Texans split their district games this week, losing to Davenport on Tuesday 3-2 [17-25,1925, 25-19, 25-17, 15-11] and beating Fredericksburg 3-0 [25-14, 25-13, 25-10] Wimberley currently sits at 29-3 overall and 2-1 in district play for second place.
On Tuesday, the Texans met the Davenport Wolves in a highly anticipated matchup featuring two of the best teams in Class 4A.
In the first set, the Texans jumped out to a hot start, leading 102. Wimberley pushed their lead to 20-8 before the Wolves started their comeback. But the Texans slammed the door on Davenport’s attempt before winning the first set 25-17.
The second set saw Wimberley and Davenport tied at 4-4 before the Texans went on a 6-1 run to lead 10-5.
The Wolves later cut Wimberley’s lead down to 15-13 before the Texans went on a 5-1 run to go up 20-14. Wimberley finished off the second set, winning 25-19 to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the game was tied at 4-4 before Davenport went on a 6-1 run to go up 10-5. Wimberley was unable to make a dent into the Wolves lead before Davenport won the third set at 25-19.
The fourth set was a much more competitive affair as the Texans and the Wolves traded the lead back and forth to a 12-12 stalemate. Davenport broke the tiebreak, going on a short 3-0 run but the run was enough to put enough space between the Wolves and the Texans.
Wimberley was unable to claim the lead back as the Texans fell 25-17 in the fourth set, sending the game into the final fifth set.
Wimberley trailed early in the set at 5-2 but 6-4 run to cut Davenport’s lead down to 9-8. In the end, the Wolves closed the fifth set out and defeated the Texans 15-11.
Senior Laney Hennessee led the team in kills with 18 followed by junior Addison Parks with 11. Junior Lilli Sandoval was third with nine.
Junior Mariah Mc-Coy led the team in blocks with six followed by sophomore Skyler Mears with five.
Senior Rhagen Masur led the team in digs with 23 followed by Hennessee with 14. Senior Addie Laney was third with 10.
Junior Carson Peoples led the team in assists with 26 followed by junior Skylar Herring with 20.
With the loss, the Texans went into the district showdown with the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies with the winning team taking control of the second place in district play.
The motivated Texans made short work of the Billies, winning the first set 25-14 then the second set at 25-13.
Wimberley finished off the sweep, winning the third set 25-10.
Hennessee led the team with eight kills followed by a tie for second with six kills from Parks and Sandoval.
Mears and McCoy led the team in blocks with three apiece while Masur led the team in digs with 13 followed by Laney with 10.
Peoples led the team in assists with 15 followed by Herring with 11.
Wimberley will be back on the road this week with a Tuesday night game against Bandera before a road showdown with rival Canyon Lake on Friday.
Both games will start at 6 p.m.
