Hill Country Community Band plans two performances of ‘American Expressions’ concert

The Hill Country Community Band is planning to present two concerts featuring “American Expressions,” the first weekend of October, with American favorites like Frank Ticheli’s “Shenandoah,” one of America’s favorite folksongs, and Eric Whitacre’s tone poem, “October.”

Another favorite, the “Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Bennett, will include five dances from the beginning of the 20th Century, from “Cake Walk” and “Western One-Step,” to “Rag.”

“Rocky Point Holiday,” by Ron Nelson, a composition for wind ensembles, was inspired by a hundredyear- old amusement park in a seaside resort in Rhode Island.

Marches by Millard Fillmore and John Philip Sousa will also be performed. One of them, Sousa’s “Liberty Bell March,” has been played by the U. S. Marine Band at five of the last seven Presidential inaugurations. The bell the Marine Band uses in the march is the ship’s bell from the SS John Philip Sousa, a World War II Liberty ship.

On Friday, October 4, the 7 p.m. concert will be performed at the Wimberley Valley Winery, 2825 Lone Man Mountain Rd in Driftwood. Audiences are encouraged to bring a chair and relax in the cool outdoor air, where snacks and drinks will be available from the winery.

The Band will perform a second concert at the Wimberley First Baptist Church, 15951 Winter’s Hill Parkway, on Sunday, October 6, at 4 p.m. Directed by Dr. Manuel Arambula, both concerts will be family friendly and free to all.

The Hill Country Community Band is a non-profit, all-volunteer band based in Hays County composed of amateur and professional players. To learn more, visit hillcountrycommunityband. org.
