Wimberley DAR promotes Constitution Week

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution set aside one week each September to honor the U.S. Constitution. This year the observance falls, as it always does, from September 17 to 23. The Jacob’s Well Chapter of the DAR will be active this week in local schools and libraries educating young people about, and reminding adults of, the powerful document that is unique to our country.

The DAR initiated the observance in 1955. The organization petitioned Congress to dedicate September 17 to 23 of each year to commemorate Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and on August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into Public Law #915.

The observance has three goals: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life; and to emphasize the responsibility of U.S. citizens to protect, defend and preserve it.

By focusing on the Constitution this week each year, it spawns many opportunities for educational initiatives and community outreach. By fostering knowledge of, and appreciation for, the Constitution and the inalienable rights it affords to all Americans, DAR helps to keep alive the memory of the men and women who secured our nation’s foundational liberties.

National DAR President General Pamela Rouse Wright said, “We encourage all citizens to join us in celebrating this powerful document that is so important to American history and to reflect on the impact the Constitution has had on the lives of American citizens past and present.”

The Jacob’s Well Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution meets every second Monday in Wimberley. Members are women descended from American Revolutionary patriots. To learn more and to support the activities of Constitution Week, contact jacobswellnsdar@ gmail.com.
