Wimberley takes the Battle of Backbone in blowout win over Canyon Lake

Wimberley takes the Battle of Backbone in blowout win over Canyon Lake

The Texans won a record sixth straight over the Canyon Hawks in the annual Battle of the Backbone as Wimberley won 46-0.

Wimberley improved their series record over Canyon Lake at 14-3 while the Texans won their ninth straight season opening game.

“Overall I was pleased,” Head Coach Doug Warren said. “Anytime you start the season off with a win it is a good thing. There were some areas that we needed to work on heading into [the game] and I thought we did a good job concentrating on those and taking them away from Canyon Lake.”

A focus for the Texans going into their game against Canyon Lake was limiting the Hawks big play passing game with the team moving from a Slot-T rushing style offense to a spread passing game offense.

The result from the vaunted Code Red Defense was six turnovers including four interceptions. Of the four interceptions, senior defensive back Conner Michael came down with three.

“They had shown big play ability in their scrimmages and we didn’t allow that,” Warren said. “We put pressure on their quarterback and made him uncomfortable. You have to do that in this age of football. You can’t let a quarterback sit back there and pick you apart. Offensively, I thought we did a good job of taking care of the ball and taking advantage of the opportunities that were given to us.”

On offense, the Texans rushing attack churned the Hawk defense 284 yards rushing with senior quarterback Cody Stoever leading the way with seven carries for 92 yards and one touchdown. Running back Maverick Jacobs was second in rushing with 14 carries for 79 yards rushing and two touchdowns while running back Josh Belanger was third with three carries for 67 yards and one touchdown.

“We took a look at several running backs and probably throughout the year that’s probably going to hold true,” Warren said. “We are going to continue to use those guys and roll them out there since they play snaps on defense. Cody [Stoever] did a nice job of running the ball. He didn’t run him a whole lot but he broke a couple of long ones. Then we were able to rest him for the second half and get our other quarterback Jackson Parker some quality snaps.”

Jacobs started the scoring fest for the Texans on Wimberley first possession, finding the endzone on a two yard rushing touchdown to put his team up 6-0 following a missed extra point.

Belanger added the Texans second score of the first quarter, running for a 40-yard touchdown to put Wimberley up 13-0 after Daniel Jimenez booted the extra point.

After another stop by the Code Red Defense, Stoever broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run as the Texans extended the lead to 19-0 following a missed two-point conversion.

An interception by the Code Red Defense from Jace Morales led to another Texan score when Jacobs again scored from the two yard line to put Wimberley up 25-0.

Two more scores, including a 14-yard touchdown pass from Stoever to wide receiver Nolan Waida, made it a 38-0 game before quarterback Jackson Parker scored the final touchdown of the night on a seven-yard run to make the final score 46-0.

Wimberley returns home this Friday in a showdown with another longtime rival in the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies.

The Wimberley- Fredericksburg series dates back to 2008 and is one of the most played series in the history of Texan football. Wimberley leads the overall series 12-2.

Kickoff is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m.
