Texans go perfect for the week with a tournament win at Johnson City

It was a clean slate for the Texans as Wimberley not only defeated the San Antonio Southwest Dragons in their non-district game but also won their second tourney of the season at the Johnson City Tournament.

Wimberley improves to 21-2 overall and maintains their No. 2 4A state ranking in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll.

The Texans started off their week with a roadtrip to San Antonio to battle the Southwest Dragons.

Wimberley started off the first set hot with a 25-15 win in the first set. The Dragons were able to bounce back in the second set but the Texans managed to hold off Southwest for the 25-20 win.

Southwest took the third set at 25-23 to avoid the sweep but the Texans finished the job in the fourth set with a 25-23 win to claim the match.

Laney Hennessee led the Texans in kills with 21 followed by Cameron Thames and Addison Parks with 13 then Lilli Sandoval with 12. Carson Peoples led the team in assists with 33 while Rhagen Masur led the team in digs with 28.

The Texans continued their week by competing at the Johnson City Tournament where Wimberley was the defending champs.

In the first game of the tournament, the Texans first took on the Copperas Cove Bulldogs. Wimberley swept the Bulldogs 2-0 [25-16, 2518] for their first win of the tourney.

In their next game, the Texans battled the Boerne Geneva Eagle where Wimberley captured their second win at 2-0 [25-18, 25-8].

Wrapping up the Friday schedule, the Texans took on the Killeen Ellison Eagles. Once again, it was a clean sweep for Wimberley, beating Ellison 2-0 [25-19, 2519].

On the final day of Saturday play, Wimberley took on the Lago Vista Vikings junior varsity team. The Texans blew away their competition winning 2-0 [25-7, 25-6].

In the second game of the day, Wimberley took on Ellison once again in a rematch. While the Eagles put up a fight, the Texans once again came away with the sweep 2-0 [25-17, 25-12].

In the championship game, Wimberley saw the tournament hosts in the Johnson City Eagles. This was the second meeting between Wimberley and Johnson City during the 2024 season where the Texans defeated the Eagles 3-1 [26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 25-12].

Johnson City surprised Wimberley in the first set as the Eagles won 26-24. However, the Texans were able to bounce back and take the second set at 25-18.

Coming down to a final third set and the championship on the line, the Texkicker ans knocked off the Eagles 26-24 to win the match 2-1 and capture their second straight Johnson City Tournament Title.

Wimberley returns home this week with two home games. On Tuesday, the Texans host longtime rival the Blanco Panthers Tuesday night before the Wimberley View press time. On Friday, the Texans will be back in Texan Gym to battle the Burnet Bulldogs. Tip-off for Wimberley-Burnet is scheduled for 6 p.m.
