The Wimberley Village Library’s Youth Summer Reading Program for kids 0 to 12 years of age proved to be the largest Summer Reading program ever held by the library. The program began June 5 with a Kick-off and ended August 16.
A total of 1,896 individual reading logs that counted the 11,025 books read by kids were turned in at the end of the four week program. For each reading log turned in, young patrons received a brag tag to add to a necklace or backpack ring and a prize of their choice. The 2024 program exceeded the number of books read and logs turned in for any previous year.
Each Wednesday during the summer, a Wacky Wednesday program was presented in the library’s new community room. Wacky Wednesday programs included interactive storytellers, interactive music programs, magicians, the Science of Bubbles, reptile programs and a grand finale of indoor mini- golf. More than 300 kids attended some of the programs.
For the first year ever, the library opened an hour early for Camp Community kids so they could spend time in the library and learn about the wealth of programs and activities offered there. For many of them, it was a novel experience and their first time to receive a library card.
A total of 530 campers visited the library. “It was very exciting to see campers return in the afternoon with their parents to get their library cards,” said Beth Jordan, Children’s Librarian.
“Another exciting aspect of our partnership with Camp Community,” Jordan continued, “was supplying dozens of books for the kids to read. Counselors reported that campers used their discretionary time to read the books we supplied. Some campers asked for additional reading material.”
Plans are already in the works for next year’s Summer Reading Program. Jordan and Tiffany Sowersby, Children’s Associate librarian, will be attending the Texas Reading Showcase this month to select performers for next summer.
A poster of the donors who contributed to the Summer Reading program will be displayed in the library, hopefully by September 14, in time for the library’s 50th Anniversary and Grand Opening event.
