Wimberley’s Starlight Symphony Orchestra is holding auditions for new players this Thursday, August 15, at 7 p.m. at Wimberley First Baptist Church.
Organized in 2003, the orchestra presents a concert season each year that is free to the public. The concert orchestra is composed of professional, semi-professional, amateur and student musicians from Austin, Bee Cave, Blanco, Buda, Canyon Lake, Driftwood, Dripping Springs, Kyle, Lockhart, Johnson City, Marble Falls, New Braunfels, Oak Hill, San Marcos, West Lake and Wimberley.
All new and substitute players must audition to play in the orchestra. Prospective members are asked to play two pieces for SSO’s conductor, Dr. David Oertel. Audition selections should be short, three-to-five minute pieces that demonstrate contrasting styles. One selection should have a faster tempo that shows technical ability and the other selection should be a work of slower tempo that demonstrates melodic tonality. Auditions, according to SSO literature, are relaxed, informal, fun and required for season players as well as substitute players.
On October 5, the orchestra will open their season with a performance at the Hays Consolidated Independent School District’s Performing Arts Center in Kyle. On October 12, they will present their program at the Wimberley First Baptist Church, and on October 13, they will take their concert to the Wimberley Valley Winery in Driftwood.
