Texans prep for the 2024 volleyball season

The Texans completed their two scrimmages both at home and at Liberty Hill in preparation for the 2024 volleyball season.

This season, Wimberley will be under a new head coach, Misty Remmers, who has taken over the program.

“It means a lot,” Remmers said. “This is a storied program and they notoriously do very well. You are talking about six state championships and 10 state tournament appearances. It is exciting and a coach’s dream. I’m humbled, blessed and I can’t wait to get the ball rolling.”

Wimberley returns nine players from last year’s team that finished with a 36-8 record and advanced to the 4A Region IV title game before falling to district rival Davenport who later went to win the state championship.

After concluding preseason, Remmers is happy with how the Texans performed during the scrimmages while noting the team still has to work out some of the kinks.

“I thought it went very well,” Remmers said. “We still have work to do just like everyone else across the state of Texas. But I’m excited that the girls are figuring it out. With nine returners and six new kids who are getting along very well, our goal is to stay happy and stay healthy.”

The Texans are led by a strong upperclassmen group with four seniors and nine juniors on the varsity roster headed by senior outside hitter, Laney Hennesee. Hennesee, who is currently committed to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide, was recently named to the Top 10 list of volleyball players to watch for in Central Texas by the Austin Statesman.

With a top-heavy roster, Remmers expects everyone to contribute in a major way for the team for this year.

“The juniors in general are bringing a lot to us,” Remmers said. “Our other two seniors, Rhagen Masur and Addie Laney, are pretty seasoned themselves. Then [Kinsey Rothbard] is going to be really helpful off the bench and be our 12th person. We have a lot of athletic middles so it’s hard for me to say any one kid is going to be this or that. At any time, any of our 14 kids will step up and play a big role for us, which is super exciting.”

With the expectations of making their first appearance in the state title game since 2020 and 11th appearance overall, being able to execute the gameplay while staying healthy will be critical for the team.

“It’s going to come down to execution,” Remmers said. “How well can we execute [is going to be key]. I keep going back to ‘Stay Happy, Stay Healthy’ so if we can do those two things and cut down on some errors, I think we are going to be alright.”

Wimberley opens the season on the road against the Buda Johnson Jaguars Tuesday night before the Wimberley View press time. The Texans will be back home for the annual Tex-Fest volleyball tournament this weekend.
