Eagle Scout project builds gazebo at Alexis Pointe

Eagle Scout project builds gazebo at Alexis Pointe

Sailor Hendrix, a 15-year-old Wimberley Boy Scout, along with his troop, breathed new life into Alexis Pointe Senior Living by building a gazebo and picnic area for residents.

The venture, called an Eagle Scout Service Project, is a requirement for Boy Scouts who want to achieve the Eagle Scout rank in scouting. Its purpose is to demonstrate leadership and community service and each Scout must envision, plan and carry out the project to completion. It is considered the most difficult advancement requirement on the journey to Eagle Scout.

The project kicked off May 3, with the construction of rebar cages and the installation of formwork supports.

On May 18, Sailor wrote, “This was my first big Eagle Project workday with Troop 127. We started each day with a safety briefing and made sure everyone knew where the first aid kit was located. We encouraged people to drink lots of water and to think before they act.” Scouts who participated were Triet Vu, Travis Santi, Spencer Douglass, Tristan Santi, Ashleigh Douglass, Andrew Douglass, Cole Jones, Aaron Jones and brothers Scout and Fox Hendrix, who earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2016.

During the following months, Sailor, along with members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 127 and his family, built and assembled various components of the project.

In June, roof trusses went up and on July 21, work to assemble the gazebo bench was completed. On July 21, the picnic area improvements brought the project to completion with the placement of an Americans with Disabilities- friendly picnic table on a crushed granite pad that the Scouts created. The picnic area improvements were funded by leftover contributions from a WimberleyArts. org mural project.

“Sailor and Troop 127 have completely transformed our community,” said Al Mata, Executive Director of Alexis Pointe Senior Living. “This project not only showcases the spirit of community service but also leaves a lasting legacy that our residents will cherish for a long time to come.”

ALONG WITH THE GAZEBO, THE PICNIC AREA ENHANCEMENTS WERE COMPLETED ON JULY 21.

SAILOR’S BROTHER SCOUT HENDRIX, ALSO OF TROOP 127 WHO ACHIEVED EAGLE SCOUT STATUS IN 2018, HELPED INSTALL THE FIRST POST.
