Wimberley’s Barnabas Connection will be hosting their eighteenth annual Back to School Fiesta on August 10. With the beginning of school just days away, hundreds of students in the Wimberley Valley are in need of backpacks, school supplies and other services Held at the Barnabas offices on RR12, the fiesta provides a new backpack and supplies for an average of 450 students each year. Local community partners come together to provide resources for families to help ensure they have the ability to start the school year.
Providing services at the fiesta this year are the Wimberley Independent School System’s nurse, Hill Country Women’s Healthcare Collective and CommuniCare Health Centers. Dental Screenings are being furnished by Wimberley Valley Dental, the Hays County Health Department is giving immunizations and the Wimberley Lions are sponsoring vision screenings.
Other participants include the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Fig Tree Outreach Program, Amigos de Jesus, Community Action, Bee Smart and the Wimberley Valley Rangers.
The Rotary Club of Wimberley is giving away books and Wimberley Ace Hardware and Gifts is gifting students with a Texan Spirit Shirt. Each child will come away with a gift certificate for a snow cone from Wimberley Shave Ice.
At last count on August 2, 379 young people had applied to attend. By fiesta time, Barnabas hopes to sponsor as many as 475 students.
