Wimberley National Miniature Golf

Wimberley National Miniature Golf

Move over Augusta National Golf Club, Wimberley National Mini Golf has just struck a zoomie. The new Texas-themed mini golf course on RR12 held its grand opening last week. The course features holes built to resemble the Alamo, the Texas State Capitol, Cadillac Ranch, Willie Nelson’s guitar, “Trigger,” as well as William Winter’s gristmill and Old Baldy.

A spacious, 700 -square-foot clubhouse awaits golfers at the nine-hole turn and is stocked with cold beverages, beer and wine and has a Blue Bell ice cream counter. Visitors opting to play a single round can observe their group from tables in the air conditioned space or watch television.

Owners, builders and designers Chris Chicko and Lois Avila bought the property between D&D Insurance and the Cypress Creek Animal Hospital about five years ago. They began developing the lot by clearing the cedar understory to preserve handsome old oak trees overhead. Chicko, who is an avid golfer, said he always wanted to build a mini golf course. He and his sons, Alex and Zach, “ … have hit every mini golf course in Central Texas,” he said, but noticed that few of them had shade, much less an air conditioned clubhouse or restrooms.

Chicko, the owner of Three Oaks Homes, a custom home builder in Wimberley, wanted a course where people could hang out under the trees and cool off in an air conditioned space. He and his wife Lois painstakingly laid out the course and, through trial and error, arrived at the final plan. From there, they designed and built the attractions at each hole, inviting each boy to create one of their own. One of the first holes they created was a memorial to dear friends, Dan, Angela and Abbie Massula, who died in a car accident on RR12 in 2018.

A two-some who visited the course during the grand opening told Chicko that they’d rather get their exercise at Wimberley National than on their group walks “and put up with the gossip.”

Wimberley National Mini Golf is located at 15354 Ranch Rd 12. During the summer, the course is open Monday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Prices are $11 for Adults 12 and over, $7 for kids five to 11 and kids four and under play for free. Veterans, active duty military and senior citizens may also pay without charge.
