Wimberley Lions serve campers at Texas Lions Camp

Wimberley Lions serve campers at Texas Lions Camp

Volunteers from the Wimberley Lions traveled to Kerrville in June to cook and serve a picnic dinner to children at the Texas Lions Camp.

“This summer camp is offered free of charge to children ages seven to 16 with Down syndrome, autism, type-1 diabetes and physical disabilities,” said Wimberley Lions President, Doug McLean. “It’s so uplifting to talk to these amazing kids and hear how they benefit from the camp activities. This is our way to serve our community, the kids and the camp’s staff. Tips to the concession stands at Market Days help to fund this amazing camp.”

The Texas Lions Camp site was originally a sanitorium established by the American Legion, followed by U.S. Veterans Administration hospital in 1925. In 1948, as the nationwide polio epidemic raged, Lion Jack Roe, working with the Kerrville Lions Club, promoted the concept of a special camp for afflicted children.

The camp currently serves as a place of education and respite for thousands of children with Down syndrome, diabetes, or with disabilities. The Lions motto “We Serve,” results in providing campers with education, entertainment and memories to last a lifetime. For more information about Texas Lions Camp, visit www. lionscamp.com.
