The Fourth of July

When we put up the flags on the bridge this year for Memorial Day, we decided to add poppies to the flag poles. Poppies are a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future for those that have fallen.

The story behind the red poppy originates from World War I, although it officially became the national emblem in the 1920s. The American Legion made the poppy its official flower to memorialize those who had fought and died on September 27, 1920 and then the VFW began its support in 1924.

Soldiers were known to send pressed poppies home in their letters. In the poem, ‘In Flanders Field’, by Lt. Colonel John McCrae, following the second battle of Ypres, it begins with “In Flanders fields the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row.”

Although the poppy is known to be dormant for years, it is able to reemerge time and time again showcasing its resilience.

As we now approach July 4, and we mark the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted, the Keep Wimberley Beautiful team will be out adding more decorations to the bridge by the Square and around town. Our town’s parade will be from 10am to noon on the 4th. Be sure to wave as our KWB decorated truck makes its way through the town. Look out for even more flowers this year.
