LETTER to the EDITOR

I am writing to thank this newspaper for your ongoing focussed concern about the worsening water shortages facing the Texas Hill Country. And to specifically add to the points Jeffery Mazur made in his Op-Ed on June 6th.

We as individuals and family households can also contribute to alleviating this shortage without waiting for government action. I have a newly installed rain catchment system on my home which captured 13,600 gallons during the two recent downpours.

However, the capital outlay was more than most people could spare from their budgets.

Where our governing bodies can certainly “help us help ourselves” is by providing tax relief and perhaps subsidies when we install our home and business- based catchment systems. Grants for nonprofit groups could be used to seed their fundraising for this purpose.

We are looking forward to the next community wide meeting like last week’s Film Fest at Blue Hole which addresses solutions to our needs.
