On the Air with KWVH - Salwa Khan

When listeners tune into the KWVH program, Mothering Earth, hosted by Salwa Khan, PhD, every Sunday at noon, they’ll get one very special and precious gift: the voice of reason.

Salwa talks about the issues that affect us all but are sometimes hard to hear because it asks us to take a longer look and to change our habits. Her program covers such topics as water use and conservation, the problem of plastics, alternative energy, pollinators, the use of native plants, hemp, the problem of lawns, perennial food crops, food waste, green alleys, electronic waste, the use of pesticides, and the issue of a sustainable diet.

Despite her deep and abiding interest to educate others about sustainable living and the environment, she doesn’t harangue or manipulate with guilt. Her measured, respectful voice and those of her expert guests, present the evidence and offer us ways to effect change by small measures.

Salwa’s media background is as a writer, producer and video editor for the PBS NewsHour, CNN and NBC and for educational and museum clients. She taught media and documentary video production to students at Texas State University, where she also worked with university faculty developing and producing video for their courses. Her Mothering Earth program was recently picked up by the Pacifica radio network because of its excellent content. It also airs on KZSM in San Marcos and can be found on multiple podcast platforms at mothering- earth.com. Her producer is her husband Robert Currie, who also has had a long career in television news and the media. She and Bob have lived in Wimberley since 1991, where she practices organic gardening. She is an avid bike rider and serves on the KWVH board.

In addition to her solid credentials, Salwa is soft spoken and wise. Like all sages, she persists and waits for her information to find fertile ground.

“I believe in the power of one,” she said in a recent interview. “Each of us can do something every day that would be beneficial to the environment. If we all do something, change will come.”
