Garden Club’s 35th Spring Tour May 11

Garden Club’s 35th Spring Tour May 11

The Wimberley Garden Club will hold its 25th Spring Garden tour on May 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Three distinctly different gardens will be on display to ticket holders: an acre and a half garden in Woodcreek, a 30-acre property spanning two sides of Lone Man Creek, and a Certified Wildlife Habitat in Spoke Hollow. The homeowners, along with Garden Club representatives, Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists, will lead the tours and answer questions.

The quiet 1.5-acre property in Woodcreek with many heritage oaks suffered greatly in the 2023 ice storm but homeowners made use of downed limbs to line pleasant paths, used yards of leaves to mulch and adapted to new light levels across the property. Hardy transplants from a previous home in Houston, blooming perennials and roses thrive in protected areas while native and adapted trees, ornamentals and groundcovers flourish everywhere else. Rocks for walkways and water management were mined on site.

The 30-acre property on the tour that spans both sides of Lone Man Creek is the result of a thorough study of topography, rainwater flow and native flora. The homeowners laid paths to take advantage of the terrain’s natural beauty, from the garden’s cliff down to its creek. Eight benches offer appealing vistas. Garden features include hundreds of native sotols, oaks, fruit trees, nut trees, herbs, wildflowers, grasses, a rose garden, and wet-weather waterfalls and ponds. In the Spoke Hollow garden, a Certified Wildlife Habitat, the owners’ home, decorative iron and wood fence panels, stone structures and garden are pure do-it-yourself creations. Purchased in 1978, the 2-acre hilltop retreat is peaceful, natural and comfortable. The tour’s Garden Lovers Market, selling low cost, native, adapted and Texas SuperStar plants, will be located on this property. Rebar Christmas trees that were a part of the 2023 EmilyAnn Gardens Trail of Lights will be on sale in the market.

At each location, Wimberley Valley Art League members will be creating and selling work, and local musicians will serenade visitors. The tour benefits the Wimberley Garden Club’s donations to local community beautification projects. For tickets and more information visit wimberleygardenclub. org. Comfortable shoes, water and a widebrim hat are suggested.
