WHS Baseball: Texas split two-series with Fredericksburg

WHS Baseball: Texas split two-series with Fredericksburg

Wimberley split their two game series with their rival, Fredericksburg’s Battlin’ Billies, as the Texans dropped the first game 9-6 before winning in blowout fashion 19-4.

The Texans overall record improves to 1010-1 with a 7-4 district record that puts Wimberley in third place in the 4A District 27 Standings.

After a scoreless top of the first, the Texans loaded up the bases with two outs.

Wimberley forced a bases-loaded walk before a Billies fielding error scored two more runs for the Texans to take a 3-0 lead.

A hit batter loaded up the bases for Wimberley once more. Brister Mike connected with a RBI single into left field to score another run for the Texans, extending the lead to 4-0.

Following Mike, Bryson Young hit a single up the middle scoring two more runs to extend the lead. Fredericksburg got out of the inning following a groundout but the Texans were in firm control leading 6-0. Wimberley looked to be in firm control until disaster struck in the fourth inning.

The Billies scored eight unanswered runs in the fourth inning along with a one run in the fifth inning to take the lead. The Texan offense was shut out following the first inning as Fredericksburg took the first game at 9-6.

However, Wimberley failed to let Tuesday’s result phase them in the return trip to Fredericksburg. In the top of the first inning after hitting a leadoff single, Young scored the first run of the game by stealing home plate on the Texan double steal with runners on the corners.

Wimberley then loaded the bases with one out.

B. Anderson forced the bases-loaded walk to score another run to make it a 2-0 game.

Owen O’Neal followed up Anderson with an RBI ground ball single to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Texans capitalized on a Billies fielding error on the next at-bat that allowed two runs to score, making it a 5-0 game. O’Neal scored on a wild pitch before another Billies fielding allowed another run to score, extending the lead 7-0. A third Fredericksburg error, followed by a fielder’s choice, pushed the lead to 9-0 before a Chase Carson RBI single scored the final run of the at-bat. After just one inning, Wimberley took a commanding 10-0 lead.

But the Texan offense was not done yet. Wimberley plated five more runs in the top of the second inning before scoring four more runs in the fourth inning to cruise to the win at 19-4.

Carson was a perfect 4-4 from the plate with four hits and three RBIs. Young and Kyler Lai followed up with two hits of their own along with one RBI apiece. Maddux Couch earned the win for the Texans after pitching two innings and allowing just four hits, no runs, no walks and striking out two batters.

Wimberley closed out the weekend with a 15-5 loss to Alamo Heights.

Texans return to district play this week with archrival Canyon Lake in the Battle of the Backbone in a twogame series. Tuesday’s game will be at Canyon Lake before press time with Friday’s game set to be played at 7 p.m. in Wimberley.
