Making a New Year’s resolution is a time-honored practice thought to date to the ancient Mesopotamians. We are all aware of the stress our planet is under, so 2024 might be the year to make our resolutions to the benefit of our dear Mother Earth. Here are some suggestions:
1. Plant a pollinator garden. Pollinator populations are in decline across the United States. One reason for this decline is habitat loss. We can help! Visit a local nursery and ask about native pollinator plants. Then create your own habitat.
2. Feed the birds. In a previous article the drastic decline in bird populations was mentioned. Some birds prefer eating insects and will help keep your pollinator plants free of pests. Others are seed eaters. Black oil sunflower seed in a bird feeder just outside a favorite window can help the birds and bring pleasure to the viewer.
3. Collect rainwater. We are not out of the 2023 drought, and many of us are still on water restrictions. A wet winter is expected, but we can be sure the issue of adequate water is here to stay. There are a variety of ways to set up a rainwater collection station in your yard. This may be the only way to keep your new pollinator garden alive.
4. Decrease your turf grass. If you have a traditional turf grass lawn, consider gradually converting it to natives, either short grasses or ground cover. There are also new eco-friendly seed mixes available.
5. Finally, evaluate your use of plastics. If you are accustomed to using plastic water bottles, let this be the year you invest in a handy reusable water bottle to use every day.
Together we can make a difference for this beautiful planet we call home!
